On deck for my 4am watch and Untethered is moving consistently at 9 to 10knts putting shore further behind us, but the onshore weather system is more than keeping pace as a solid line of weather moves towards us from the Northeast. The front is about an hour behind schedule as the sun rises in the east and I ready sails for the jibe that’s to come as the wind is expected to shift North.
The front catches Untethered about 6am as the sea gets confused while the wind direction shifts 100 degrees to the North over 25 minutes. The change brings lighter wind as we adjust course to the South for the first time. The ride becomes more uncomfortable below decks as the seas work to sort out the weather systems to the North of us and another system to the South. We are navigating a narrow path between systems and hope to miss the worst of both, but wind direction has us losing progress East and pressing too far South this early in the passage.
Rain begins to fall and builds thru the day along with the sea and winds. We bring in sails to manage the heel but it is rough riding below as Untethered pounds her way Southeast. We are now in the teeth of the journey and the Atlantic and for sure testing Untethered and the crew.
Internet, GPS & co. are expected, take lot attention in modern times. But mother nature can demand attention for itself. Then you have your adventure.
Great to hear from you Johannes, I am hoping to bring Untethered to the Med in the fall, if COVID permits. Would love to welcome you onboard!! Hope you are well!!
